The Federation of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists Societies of India (FOGSI), in collaboration with the Champa Devi Memorial Hospital, organised the Astra Bhyarat Jagruti Yatra at Madhuban, Barang, on Friday. The Yatra, which started on September 1 from Kanyakumari to spread the awareness on social and medical needs of women, will cover 25 States before culminating on October 1 in New Delhi.

The Association of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Odisha (AOGO) had identified Madhuban as the first village in Odisha to be adopted through this programme. The Champa Devi Memorial Hospital at Madhuban, run by Indian Metals Public Charitable Trust (IMPaCT), provided the necessary support and infrastructure in organising the programme.

About 1,000 people from nearby villages, including about 200 schoolchildren, attended the programme. The goal behind organising such a programme was to educate adolescent girls, eradicate anaemia, promote contraception and safe abortion, safe delivery and spread awareness on cancer detection, population control and fertility. About 40 doctors of FOGSI and AOGO conducted free checkups on 450 females.

Tests for anaemia, menstrual behaviour, gynaecological and obstetritics and anti-natal ailments were conducted and medicines were distributed for free.

A general meeting was conducted during the programme, which was presided over by president of AOGO Dr RK Santuka. MP Baijayant Panda, who attended as the chief guest, visited the nearby schools to witness the interactive session between FOGSI members and the girl students. In his address, he appreciated the contributions by FOGSI and AOGO to the society. IMPaCT has always been a great supporter of such noble initiatives and would extend all possible help to improve the heath standard of the common people, he said. Among others, AOGO secretary Dr Rajat Mohanty and medical officer of Champadevi Hospital Dr UK Mohanty also spoke. Panda planted a neem tree in the campus of the hospital as part of the programme.
