The Odisha based Indian Metals & Ferro Alloys Ltd (IMFA) group on Monday announced it was planning to expand its capacity at the Choudwar plant to increase ferro chrome production by 1.4 lakh ton per annum and add a 120 MW power plant at an estimated cost of Rs 600 crore. It is India's largest producer of ferro alloys, with 130 MVA (mega volt ampere) installed furnace capacity. The project is expected to go operational by the end of 2009 fiscal.

The Group will put up two units of 24 MVA furnace capacity in two phases and one unit of 48 MVA in the third and final phase in its existing industrial complex at Choudwar, at a total cost of Rs 200 crore. The furnace in the first phase will be commissioned in June 2005. The ISO 9001 certification group, which comprises of IMFA-established in 1962 -and Indian Charge Chrome Ltd (ICCL) launched in 1983-produces Ferro Chrome, Ferro Silicon, High purity Ferro Silicon and Ferro Silicon Magnesium for the domestic and international market. The ICCL has 108 capacity power plant at Choudwar.

The ferro chrome industry has witnessed a resurgence, particularly in Asia. Demand in India is also increasing at a fast clip due to several infrastructure and construction projects which require stainless steel. The expansion plans have been formulated with a view to not only tap the increasing demand for ferro chrome but also to build upon our leadership position in the industry. The highlight of this project is that value addition will take place within Odisha which one believes is imperative, the group Joint Managing Director, Subhrakant Panda, told ET.

Mr Panda alongwith the top executive from the group, last week met chief minister, Naveen Patnaik and top state government offcials to brief them about the expansion plan. We made a presentation about our expansion plans to the chief minister and senior government officials who were very receptive. Since the first phase is already underway we have requested that we expeditiously want to enter into an MOU with the state government which will enable us to pursue the project with full vigour, he added. Mr Panda is scheduled to meet the officials next week again. The company has already had financial closure for the 24 MVA furnace to be put in phase 1.
