Mining

Chrome Ore raised from our Sukinda and Mahagiri Mines in Odisha’s Jajpur District meets the entire captive requirement which currently stands at 0.6 million tonnes per annum and will go up when smelting capacity increases in line with our expansion plans. The mining leases are valid till 2049 and 2055 respectively resulting in stability of ore supplies, and there is a ‘right of first refusal’ thereafter as per the provisions of the MMDR Amendment Act 2015.

Although India has limited chrome ore reserves, it is of very high quality with ~98% being located in Odisha. Starting with a small mine which met only a fraction of our requirement, today we are recognised as best-in-class by becoming the first company to carry out underground mining operations in Sukinda Valley.

Smelting

Sukinda

Sukinda Chromite Mines started as an opencast mine in 1999 accounts for approximately half of IMFA’s ore raising. Work on the underground portal started in 2024 and over the next few years the mine will transition to underground operations which is more ecofriendly.

Our manufacturing ecosystem is fully integrated where captive ore and power meet the requirement of the smelters making IMFA a highly reliable and competitive producer of ferro chrome.
