Rower Mamata Jena wins

Young female rower Mamata Jena bagged the 15th Ekalabya Award
for the year 2007. The jury members of the Ekalabya Award
Committee were unanimous in deciding Mamata among the 13 short-listed
candidates for the prestigious award at a meeting here on
Wednesday.
The award, instituted by the Indian Metals Public Charitable
Trust (IMPaCT), the charitable wing of the IMFA Group, carries
a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh and a citation. Besides the Ekalabya
awardee, there are two runners-up awards carrying a cash prize
of Rs 10,000 each.
Mamata has a brilliant track record for the past two years
winning bronze in open women coxless fours in the 11th Asian
Rowing Championship held in Hyderabad. Besides, she has fared
well in many international events, including the 15 th Asian
Games held in Doha in November, 2006, and won gold medals
in the National Rowing Championship in 2006 and 2007.
Besides Mamata, talented chess player Kiran Manisha Mohanty
and athlete Dandu Soren will also be conferred citations and
prize money of Rs 10,000 each for their remarkable performances
in various State and national level championships during the
two years from April 2005 to March, 2007.
Announcing the names of the award winners, Trustee of IMPaCT
and MP Baijayant Panda said, "IMPaCT has been in continuous
pursuit to recognise and foster excellence in sports and literature."
